House and Senate Push Deadlines to Avoid Partial Government Shutdown
Late Wednesday, congressional leaders struck a funding deal for the rest of the fiscal year on six annual spending bills, alongside a stopgap measure that will prevent partial government shutdowns on March 1 and March 8. Lawmakers announced that they have finalized deals on the Agriculture-FDA, Energy-Water, Military Construction-VA, Transportation-HUD, Interior-Environment, and Commerce-Justice-Science bills. The deadline for passage of these measures will be March 8. The rest of the FY24 bills, including Labor-HHS-Ed, will be pushed to a new deadline of March 22. The House voted to pass the legislation on Thursday afternoon, and the Senate quickly followed suit, sending the bill to the President’s desk. Speaker Mike Johnson shared that lawmakers will release the text of the initial six appropriations bills this weekend.
