Partial government shutdown deadline nears; Congress reveals FY24 funding plan
Congress has until midnight Friday to pass a six-bill spending deal to avoid a partial government shutdown. White House and Congressional leaders announced on Monday that deals on the bills had been reached, and at 3 a.m. Thursday morning, Congressional leaders released the details of the $1.2 trillion deal to fund the U.S. government through Sept. 30, 2024. To avoid a partial shutdown, the House would have to waive its 72-hour rule for a vote, which requires three days’ notice before voting on legislation.
The funding package maintains flat funding from FY23 for most Department of Education programs, including Pell grants and Work Study. The National Institutes of Health will be funded at $48.581 billion, which includes $1.5 billion for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H).
