Federal Update

The Federal Relations Team congratulates Dr. Nasser Paydar, Chancellor Emeritus of IUPUI, for his nomination to serve as Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education.
Dr. Paydar joined IUPUI in 1985 as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and held a number of positions from 1989 to 2003 including chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, associate dean for graduate programs, associate dean for academic programs, and executive associate dean. Dr. Paydar became the vice chancellor and dean of Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus in 2004 and served for three years, after which he was appointed chancellor of IU East in 2007. He was named IUPUI’s executive vice chancellor in 2012, and became IUPUI’s fifth chancellor in 2015.
IU’s federal office will monitor Dr. Paydar’s nomination, and encourages the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee to favorably report his nomination out of committee.
USICA/COMPETES Act Update
This month, House and Senate Leadership announced the members who will participate in the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) and America COMPETES Act conference committee. Conferees will work to resolve the differences between the House-passed America COMPETES Act and the Senate-passed U.S. Innovation and Completion Act (USICA). The federal relations team will continue to track conference negotiations around the two pieces of competitiveness legislation.
