Bipartisan Senate AI Working Group Releases Policy Roadmap
On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released a 30-page policy roadmap for Artificial Intelligence, alongside Senators Todd Young (R-IN), Mike Rounds (R-SD), and Martin Heinrich (D-NM). The plan highlights areas of bipartisan consensus on AI, including the following recommendations:
- Congress should invest at least $32 billion annually for non-defense AI research and development at agencies including Department of Energy, Department of Commerce, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, National Institute for Standards and Technology, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
- Advance the CREATE AI Act (S. 2714), sponsored by Senators Heinrich, Rounds, and Young, which would formally establish the National AI Research Resource to give educators and students access to computational tools for research and development
- Support the Workforce Data for Analyzing and Tracking Automation Act (S. 2138), sponsored by Senator Young and Senate Homeland Security Chair Gary Peters (D-MI), which would measure the effect of automation on the workforce
