On June 25, the Indiana General Assembly’s Legislative Council announced interim committee topics for legislators to study between now and the 2026 short session. The council authorized and directed 18 different legislative interim committees and task forces to deal with 22 topics and responsibilities. Nine statutory study committees (including Education) and task forces (including Health Care Cost Oversight and Medicaid Oversight) will not meet as they were not assigned any topics for the interim.
The Commerce and Economic Development Study Committee was signed to review “barriers to entry into licensed professions and identification of professions that require accreditation from a non-governmental entity.” Meanwhile, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force (created by SEA 150-2024) continues its work from the previous interim, 1. studying AI that has been used, developed, or considered for use by state agencies, and 2. assessing benefits and risks to the state on how state AI use might affect Hoosiers.
Finally, the Government Reform Task Force is tasked to “review and make recommendations regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of the various State Boards, Commissions, and Councils with a focus on how they are funded and the work they have produced and are responsible for,” building off some of the work completed by the 2024 Interim Study Committee on Government.
The House and Senate heads have assigned members to each committee. The two chambers trade off who chairs the groups, and it’s the Senate’s turn this year. Committee member rosters, meeting agendas, hearing schedules, and live streams are available at the Indiana General Assembly website.
