Statehouse Update
August 19, 2022
In mid-June, Governor Holcomb called for a special session of the Indiana General Assembly to begin in July to deal with inflationary relief due to the state’s revenue collection swelling the state’s surplus above $6 billion. With the U.S. Supreme Court’s late June decision in the Dobbs case returning power to the states to regulate abortion, the General Assembly also tackled that issue. After two weeks of session that began July 25 and ended August 5, lawmakers passed SB1, a ban on abortion with some exceptions, and SB 2, which returns a $200 rebate to individual taxpayers, paying down an additional $1 billion in unfunded state pension liabilities, and providing some additional funding for programs supporting mothers and children.
The General Assembly will now continue its regularly scheduled summer study committees in the coming months prior to the November election.
Our office is now focusing on preparing the university’s budget request for the 2023 budget session in partnership with the University Budget Office. The Board of Trustees approved IU’s biennial capital project requests at their August meeting, and President Whitten will present the University’s budget request for the first time to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education at their September meeting being held in Bloomington next month.
