IU Regionals at the Rotunda

On March 26, Students presented their research findings during the inaugural Regionals at the Rotunda event heldat the Indiana Statehouse.The event celebrated undergraduate research and the faculty members who support those efforts at IU Kokomo, IU East, IU Northwest, IU South Bend, and IU Southeast. Student researchers and their faculty mentors came together to demonstrate how each regional campus makes a local impact, encourages economic mobility, and advances research to address the needs of the state.

“Our regional campuses are powerful engines of opportunity, delivering profound benefits across Indiana through both research innovation and meaningful service,” said Pamela Whitten, President of Indiana University.  

“Regionals at the Rotunda showcases the real-world impact of student work in their respective academic fields,” said Ken Iwama, Vice President for Regional Campuses and Online Education. 

With approximately 18,000 students enrolled and contributing more than $1 billion in economic impact, these campuses are vital to Indiana’s progress and prosperity.

Economic Engagement Update

Hoosier Anthony Leal turns lessons from basketball, business into college athletics tech platform 

On the basketball court, Anthony Leal is a beloved player for the Indiana Hoosiers. Off the court, he’s a budding entrepreneur who is doing exactly what one of his Indiana University Kelley School of Business courses challenges students to do: turn an idea into a business. 

Leal co-founded Motion Sports Inc. with IU graduates Jay Townsend and Nate Ebel. Motion provides a technology platform that handles all the needs of an athletic department and its athletes more easily and in one place. The platform will eventually handle payments from athletic departments to athletes as a result of the House vs. NCAA lawsuit settlement regarding revenue sharing.

IU Bloomington introduces Rural Indiana Faculty Tour 

All IU Bloomington faculty are being offered an opportunity to connect to rural Indiana, expanding their capacity to collaborate with the state through student engagement, research, creative activity, and service.  Areas of focus will include arts and culture, community resilience, education, health, housing, and leadership and innovation. The tour is hosted by the Center for Rural Engagement and sponsored by the Office of the Provost. 

This enriching experience is tailored for faculty members looking to deepen their connection with the state, develop impactful, community-engaged work, and receive valuable recognition and incentives.

IU in the News

IU names Arrick Jackson chancellor of Northwest campus  

Arrick Jackson has been named chancellor of the Indiana University Northwest campus, effective July 1. Jackson currently serves as provost and senior vice president for academic and student affairs for Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he has worked in academic affairs since 2019. During his time there, he has launched several new degrees and programs; restructured the number of colleges; increased international and graduate student enrollment; and created a faculty scholars initiative that funds research.

Luddy School raises the bar as iConference 2025 host 

The Luddy School successfully hosted the mid-March prestigious iConference 2025, one of the world’s top global conferences for informational professionals. ILS Chair Noriko Hara’s long-time vision paid off in a big way, drawing more than 250 professors, students and information professionals. Some traveled more than 8,000 miles to attend. 

Noriko Hara dared big and won. The Information and Library Science chair and professor of Information Science aimed to host one of the world’s top global conferences for informational professionals and that vision became last week’s iConference 2025 “Living in an AI-gorithmic Worldat the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering.

School of Education students support young readers in need 

Every Thursday, a group of IU School of Education students leaves campus bright and early. Their destination is Westlake Elementary School on the west side of Indianapolis. They spend the school day working in a classroom and then stay after school is done for the day to help tutor Westlake students that need extra help with reading. Westlake staff provided the lessons and guidance for School of Education students, who in turn provide the tutoring. 

The partnership with Westlake over the past several years is even more important now, given the new landscape in elementary schools in which instruction needs to be aligned to Science of Reading instructional strategies.
